Impressionist Oil Painting 'Gateway in the Woods'

A fine oil on canvas depicting an enigmatic scene of an old gateway in the woods. The painting is an exploration of light, contrasting the shade of the woods with the light shining through the gateway. The painting is worked with quick broad brushstrokes and has a confidence to it typical of the impressionist style. The piece is signed to the lower right and dated 1948. The signature is for Jan Van Opstal and a label on the reverse lists his dates as 1912-1976. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The gilt frame is not the original but a vintage example that works very well with the painting. A great decorative work with a wonderful feel to it.
