Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black Forest carved furniture originated in the woodcarving centre of Brienz, Switzerland, during the nineteenth century. Renowned for detailed craftsmanship, artisans sculpted functional domestic items and seating decorated with native wildlife, notably bears, alongside pinecones and foliage.

Craftsmen primarily utilized native Swiss timbers such as linden wood (lime wood), walnut, and oak. The timber was hand-carved using specialized chisels and typically finished with a dark stain or polish to emphasize texture and grain.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display visible hand-carving tool marks, realistic anatomical detail on animal figures, natural timber oxidation, and period-appropriate joinery methods without modern mechanical fasteners.

A carved hall seat serves as a focal point in a hallway or entryway. Pairing dark carved wood with neutral wall palettes, textured runners, or contemporary artwork highlights the historical craftsmanship while maintaining balance.

Regular light dusting with a soft brush removes dust from carved recesses. To prevent the timber from drying or splitting, place the bench away from direct heat sources and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically.
