Abstracted Landscape, Trees, 1946, French Modernist Mixed Media Gouache on Paper

Description

A luminous abstracted modernist landscape in the South of France by Françoise Grémi, dating from 1946. While I have little biographical information about this woman artist who lived discreetly, there are records of her being awarded the prestigious Fénéon Prize for the Arts in 1951. The Fénéon Prize (Prix Fénéon), established in 1949 by Fanny Fénéon, the widow of French art critic Félix Fénéon was awarded to promising young writers and painters under the age of 35.

Our mixed media work on paper (gouache, chalks and grattage?) is monogrammed at the lower right. Measuring 23,5 x 32 cm at sight, it is presented in a simple, more recent frame. The overall framed size is 32,5 x 43 cm. Attached to the verso are the date and the artists full signature, probably taken from a previous mount of the work.
