Large Antique Bidjar Carpet, Persia

Description

A striking enormous antique Bidjar carpet woven in north-west Persia, woven in this enormous size the condition is fantastic for a huge carpet over 100 years old.  This type are renowned for their toughness and durability due to their construction. A very elegant piece with rich natural dyes, this carpet would look beautiful under a dining table. Woven with a deep indigo background with vivid warm reds, pinks, greens and gorgeous pale blue dyes in a beautiful all over design.

Famous for their amazing durability due to their construction of multiple weft threads and dense pile, this 100 year old Bidjar carpet is no exception and in great original order.

Rugs from Bidjar are very tough due to their structure which consists of usually five weft threads, two are loose wool threads followed by one taut cotton thread, then a further two loose wool threads. These are tightly beaten together against the knots, creating an extremely tight, compact rug. They tend to be floral in design, with the 'Herati' fish design commonly used in the main field and border.

Bidjar carpets originate from the Kurdish town of Bidjar in north-western Persia. Historically known as the iron rugs of Persia, they earned a reputation for extreme durability due to their exceptionally dense weave and heavy structural weight.

Traditional Bidjar carpets feature hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool foundation. Weavers utilise a wet-warp technique and hammer extra weft threads tightly together, resulting in a dense structure that resists dirt penetration and wear.

Authentic Bidjar carpets are distinguished by their notable weight and rigid feel, making them difficult to fold compared to other Persian weaves. They frequently feature deep crimson reds, navy blues, all-over floral motifs, or central medallion arrangements.

Designers use Bidjar carpets to anchor formal living rooms, dining spaces, or libraries by placing them beneath key seating areas. The deep red and navy tones provide contrast against neutral walls, polished wood flooring, or contemporary upholstery.
