C. 1919 Dark Portrait of a Lady in a Hat

Description

A most unusual dark portrait of a lady in a black hat. She could perhaps be wearing her mourning wear, which would make the painting a mark of respect for a lost spouse or relative. This seems likely as it bears a date of 1919, just one year after the end of World War I.

It’s signed in the upper left and housed within an appropriate later frame.

Medium: Oil on cardboard laid on canvas

Size including frame: 17” x 19½” / 43cm x 50cm

Year of creation: c. 1919

Provenance: Germany

Condition: Very good overall. Frame with a few knocks here and there.
