Having bought and sold four paintings by Gabriel Vié (1888-1973) during the past two years, which all sold very quickly, I am delighted to be able to present a further work by the artist!

Gabriel Vié has an enormous gift for depicting water: its movement, ripples and flow, and the way it reflects light and nearby trees. Look into the water he paints, and you will find it almost hypnotic. A lover of nature, he presents it like it is: poetic yet robust.

In this oil on canvas from the 1940s or early 1950s, Vié shows an angler/a fisherman climbing out of his boat, back on to solid ground. The painting is titled by the artist in French "Retour de Peche" on the verso, and bears Vié's red wax seal.

The oil on canvas measures 54 x 65 cm and is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size in a quality frame is 65 x 77 cm.

Gabriel Vié was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français. At the Salon, he received a special mention at the exhibition of 1935, and was awarded its silver medal in 1942.
