Sold by: Deco Interiors

Alexander George Fraser(son)(1786-1865). A Highland Sportsman in a ''Croft Interior''. Oil on board: 24 x 18.5cm. Signed lower right. Circa 1830. Inoriginal plaster gilt frame.

Alexander Fraser was an assistant to David Wilkie for 20 years, and his influence is strongly apparent in the domestic geure picture with its sketchy brushwork and dark tones. It appears to be a study for a larger finished in the National gallery of Scotland acquired in 1951 having previously been in the collection of Lord Northwick of Northwick Moreton-in-marsh, since the 1830''s. Fraser had a long successful career exhibiting at the R.A.(1810-40), British institution and R.S.A. A contemporary said of his work that ''most of his pictures deal with social or convivial situations in the spirit of comedy.'' In this picture not all the family are thrilled by the father proudly holding aloft Grey Heron for tea, and one child riffles through his gamebag hoping for an alternative.
