Beverley began exhibiting his marine watercolours from 1831 onwards and continued to make his living as both a scene painter and actor. Because of his theatrical interests Beverley produced relatively few watercolours and was kept busy by the demands on his time as a theatrical painter and scenographer. Nevertheless, as one early critic had noted, ‘Beverley painted water-colour pictures of rare and delicate beauty, works which alone should suffice to win for him a place in the front rank among our masters of water-colour art.’
The present watercolour is an attractive view of Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast. It measures 7"x 12" and is signed lower left. It is mounted and framed into a quality old gilt swept frame giving an overall size of 18"x 23".
