Yorkshire landscape painter, mainly in watercolours, member of the Priestman family of artists.

Gertrude Priestman was born in Bradford and attended Bradford Girl’s Grammar School. She lived most of her adult life in the family home at Ben Rhydding, near Ilkley, and exhibited work with the Yorkshire Union of Artists between 1907-9. Most of her work was exhibited between 1921 – 1936, including at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Her Yorkshire landscape paintings were also reproduced in the ‘Dalesman’ magazine.

The Priestman family were influential and significant members of the Bradford artistic community. BERTRAM (1868-1951) ARNOLD (1854-1925) and GERTRUDE PRIESTMAN (1870-1955). Gertrude was the sister of Bertram and niece of Arnold Priestman, and like them she too painted landscapes. But her work has been largely eclipsed by her brother and uncle. However, it deserves greater recognition, as, although not presented on the same scale as Bertram’s work, her landscapes are finely painted, often in understated colours.
