19th Century Pastoral Scene at Dusk, French Oil Painting

Description

A late 19th-century oil on wood depicting a beautiful pastoral view across distant hills before a blood-red sky.

The brushwork feels fluid and impressionistic, so perhaps this was painted ‘en plein air’, while the artist caught the last of the evening’s glow.

Towards the foreground, the two cows are little more than six or seven brush marks, while the reeds are just quickly sketched in.

The painting is housed within a gilded swept frame with coved sides and a decorative outer border. Signed illegibly in the lower left.

Size including frame: 27” x 19” / 69cm x 49cm

Year of creation: 1890

Provenance: France

Condition: Light craquelure but good condition overall. Frame with light age-related wear.
