Richard Von Hagn, Portrait of a Young Lady in an Orange Necktie

Description

An early 20th-century portrait of a young lady in a silk blouse and orange necktie by German painter, Richard Von Hagn (1850-1933).

There’s a gentle delicacy to this portrait and a sense of shyness in the sitter. Her demure expression and subtle smile are offset by a deep red background.

Richard Von Hagn was well-respected in his day and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. He spent many years of his adult life in Venice, which became a second home for him, but returned to Dresden later in life. His contemporaries considered him to be a little introverted and he opted to dedicate his life to his art rather than settle down with a family.

The painting is housed within a stylish Art Deco frame and signed in the lower right.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size including frame: 26” x 32” / 67cm x 81cm

Year of creation: 1919

Provenance: Germany

Condition: Very good overall. Frame scrapped back from its original gilding.

Artist’s auction highlight: £3,100 achieved at Auktionshaus Stahl for ‘Raddampfer vor Venedig' (44.5cm x 60.5cm) in 2011.
