Modernist Oil Landscape Painting

A very interesting and extremely well executed modernist oil on board. The scene shows a river bank with mountains behind, there is a dark, stormy, cloudy sky with just a single break and sunlight streaming through. The work is executed in extremely thick impasto paint which has been handled with brush and palette knife with the highest level of skill, the way the light is coming through the clouds is just perfect. The painting is signed simply 'Watt' which I have been unable to identify but my feeling is the scene is Welsh and it may indicate an origin. The work is mounted in the original oak frame which really works well with the nature of the painting. The whole is in excellent condition and ready to hang. C.1950.
