Description

This gentle portrayal of the Virgin Mary dates to the late 17th-century and depicts ‘Our Lady Of The Thumb’ or ‘Madonna Del Dito’. It’s based upon an earlier painting, which is often attributed to Florentine painter, Carlo Dolci (1616-1686).

The painting gained its unusual name simply due to the appearance of Mary’s thumb from beneath her deep blue veil. It’s unclear why this was originally painted in but likely to relate to religious iconography.

This particular version is painted onto a sheet of copper and it carries a serene atmosphere - gained over years of worship.

Size including frame: 10” x 12½” / 25cm x 32cm

Year of creation: c. 1700

Provenance: Spain

Condition: The artwork itself is in fairly good condition given its age. The surface has accumulated some dirt over the years and could be cleaned with impressive results. However, you may prefer it in its darkened state, as we do. The frame is at least 200 years old and there are various old wormholes, which is often the case with frames of this age.
