A wonderful and radiant expressionist summer landscape of the South of France. If there is a gentle tinge of nostalgia in the pink and purple hues of the sky, it is not surprising, given the story of the artist and the painting.
It painted in 1941 by German Jewish émigré artist Paul Eliasberg (1907-1983). Eliasberg was living in Aix en Provence, As a Jew, he had fled from Paris and sought refuge in the Free Zone. He was active in the Resistance mouvement and living in poverty with his young family.
Son of a Russian-Yiddish translator, Paul Eliasberg had grown up in Munich, where the family frequently received visits from Heinrich and Thomas Mann, Stefan Zweig, Paul Klee and other members of the German and Russian intelligentsia.
In 1924, he had began to study art in Berlin. He moved to Paris two year years later, where he completed his studies in 1928 at the Ranson Academy as a student of Bissière. Then came the German occupation, the fear, and the war.
Our painting is a rare testimony of a troubled time. Painted with poor materials - there was little else - the oil on canvas shows extensive craquelure, which has been professionally consolidated, and is stable. It does however remain visible.
Paul Elisberg exhibited in Paris at the Salon de Mai, and one man shows have been dedicated to his work in Germany, for example at the Städtische Galerie Munich and the .
Kunsthalle Bremen.
An exhibition of Eliasberg's art - titled Landscapes of the Soul - is under way at the moment at the Geneva Museum of Art and History (until 2 Feb 2020). As explains the Press Release of the exhibition:
From 1958, Eliasberg saw his popularity take on an international dimension and his watercolours, drawings and prints attract wide attention. Images of imposing skies or flat landscapes, gothic cathedrals and towns, or impressions of his travels to Israel, Spain and Greece enabled Eliasberg to develop a personal form of figurative depiction. This visual language opens the doors to a visionary surrealism, thus providing him with an unexpected context.
The oil on canvas presented here measures 33 x 46 cm and is signed and dated at the lower right. The overall framed size is 43 x 56 cm.
Our painting figures in the archives of Mme Danielle Eliasberg, the artist's daughter.
Paintings may be viewed in Norwich and in Paris, as well as in London and Cambridge by appointment. Please contact us if you would like further details and images of an artwork.
