Old Master Drawing: French Equestrian 1810 Two Horses in a Landscape Alexandre Pau De Saint Martin (1751-1820)

The artist Alexandre Pau de Saint Martin had two sujets of predilection: trees, and horses. In this gorgeous graphite pencil drawing, we see them both.

Alexandre Pau de Saint Martin was born in 1751 in Mortagne-au-Perche in Normandy as Alexandre Peau. When he settled in Paris near the Porte Saint Martin, he added the name of his neighbourhood to his signature. (How easy it was back then to be creative with one's name!). He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1791.

Alexandre Pau de Saint Martin had studied with two of the greatest artists of his time Joseph Vernet and Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. In turn would become the teacher of Martin Drolling and be a large influence on the landscape artist Theodore Rousseau.

Works by him are now in the museums of Le Mans, Dijon, Sceaux Castle and the Museum Marmottan in Paris, among others.

The drawing presented here measures 16.5 x 22.5 cm at sight. It is signed and dated 6 September 1810 at the lower left . The overall framed size in a good frame with a deep mat is 43 x 49 cm
