Portrait Oil Painting by Albert Gilbert

A fine and interesting oil on artists board by Albert Thomas Jarvis Gilbert 1876-1927. The oil which is most likely a work done while travelling, it shows a Dutch lady in traditional dress with the Dutch hat. The painting is signed to the lower left (inscribed in the wet paint), there is also a signature on the reverse. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The work is mounted in frames from the 1920’s or 30’s in an interesting arrangement of double frames, one silver and one bronzed which actually works very well.

Albert Thomas Jarvis Gilbert was a painter and illustrator born in Walworth, London. He studied in Southport, Lancashire and was active as an artist from the 1890’s onward, he was elected to the Royal Institute of oil painters in 1909 where he exhibited 53 times. He exhibited widely until his death including 11 times at the Royal Academy.

This is a lovely work by a very good artist and is ready to hang. C.1920.
