Landscape Oil Sketch by Edwin Ellis

A charming oil on panel sketch of a coastal scene by Edwin Ellis. The painting is an oil sketch used by artists to paint quickly outdoors to then be worked up into larger works back in the studio. These sketches were most often kept by the artist but here it has been framed. The painting is in excellent condition and has been professionally cleaned. The gilt frame is really good quality and in great untouched condition with all the original gilding. The work is a beautiful little piece and a great insight into an artist's working process. The work is simply signed and dated 1890 to the lower right. Edwin Ellis was a Nottingham born painter who studied under Henry Dawson. He settled in London in the 1860's and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Sussex Street Gallery where he showed nearly 100 works. In 1893 a comprehensive collection of his works were displayed at the Nottingham Castle Museum. The painting is an unusual example of this desirable artist's work and has a wonderful untouched country house look.
