Description

A very fine and sensitively treated Romanticist portrait of a young boy, dating from 1836, It is very typical for its time - compare it, for example, with Candide Blaize's portrait of Maurice Sand (1830) in the Musée de la Vie Romantique.

Romanticism was the primary art movement in France in the early 19th Century, and represented a shift away from idealisation to the personal and emotional.

Drawn in coloured pencils and heightened with white, our artwork is dated and signed with the monogram "W" to the right. Measuring 17 x 13 cm at sight, the overall framed size in an antique pitch pine frame is 34 x 26 cm.
