George Stubbs "Volunteer" Racehorse Engraving

Description

"Volunteer" the racehorse ran between 1783 and 1786, originally under the name "Cornet." He won the Cumberland Subscription Stakes of 1100 guineas and also at 3 won at Basingstoke and Ascot, and a forfeit match at Newmarket. At age 5, now running under the name Volunteer, he won a 100 guineas sweep at Newmarket, beating Champion and others, and won two other matches, his only other races that year, and later became a successful sire. This fine example of the engraving by George Townly Stubbs measures 16"x 20" and is framed giving an overall size of 20"x 24". Below is the publication line "Republished June 4th 1817 by Edw. Orme"
