Fine English School Oil Painting After Gainsborough

A fine oil on canvas of a farmer resting with his dog, and cattle on a hillside. The painting is very finely worked and on the reverse a label ascribes it to Gainsborough, although this obviously means it is painted after an original by Gainsborough. This would make sense as the sky and composition of the work has much in common with Gainsborough. I have been unable to identify the original to which this was a copy. The painting is not signed and this is not uncommon for early paintings copying other's work. The details in the painting are wonderful, I particularly like the way the man is stroking the dog and the positioning of the cows. The painting has been lined some time ago and has been professionally cleaned, it is in excellent ready to hang condition. The period frame is a lovely elaborate Victorian period one of quite dark colouring that works well with the painting, it is in excellent condition. The whole has a great country house look. C.1800.
