A fine and striking pair of oil on canvas paintings of a lion and lioness in landscape settings. The paintings show the most striking profiles of a male lion and a lioness in an African landscape setting. The landscape settings are remarkably detailed each depicting a rift valley type area with more lions featured in the background. The paintings are signed R.Bowen. I cannot find reference to the artist however their ability is plain to see. It is likely that the artist was a commercial one and this was painted for an illustration in a book, or magazine, or as a hunting trophy. The paintings are in good condition they been professionally cleaned and do have a slight craquelure. The pair are mounted in different period gilt frames which while very different in design enhance the dramatic and decorative nature of the paintings.
