Superb Oil Portrait of a Lady

Stunning oil on canvas portrait of a lady. The figure is dressed in elaborate costume with rich fabric and elaborate silver brocade headband, and is posed against a complimentary background. The painting is a little difficult to place stylistically as there are elements that look towards the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts, but the costume would lead me to believe it dates to the Art Deco period. The painting itself is most unusual, painted on a base of silver to brighten the colours, particularly the green in the wallpaper and the colours on the dress. The oils are very thick impasto paint giving a depth and richness to the work. There is also the use of gold and silver paints in the fabrics and headdress etc. adding to the opulence of the painting. The painting is mounted in the original bespoke frame which is coloured in greens and reds on a dark gilt background to compliment the portrait. The painting is signed but only by monogram which are not easily identified but it must be a painter of considerable note. The whole is in excellent condition, the painting has been professionally cleaned and a very minor hole repaired. The frame is in untouched original condition. A superb painting with enormous decorative impact and a true one of a kind. C.1920.
