French Impressionist Discussions in the Park, the Nuns, Circa 1910 Oil on Panel

Description

Some paintings capture a moment perfectly, giving you a glimpse of a different time, different lives. An as-if-you-were-transported-there feeling, better than a photograph ever could. Here is one of them. In a park or in a square with greenery group of nuns and young women are standing in a cluster, and their discussions seem animated. Who would not like to be a fly on the wall to hear what they are saying?

Acutely observed and vigorously sketched in oils, is a work by Lucien Andrieu (1875-1968) a painter native of Montauban in Occitania, in the South of France. Like many ambitious young artists, Andrieu came to Paris, where he lived and worked between 1898 and 1910. I believe our painting - acquired there - dates from this period. Andrieu was successful - he met Monet, Braque, Picasso. One of his early paintings was bought by the sculptor Rodin, to whom he was introduced by Bourdelle.

Yet Andrieu - a Southerner at heart - decided to leave the Capital to return to his homeland. Leading the life of a recluse, his art remained refined as it evolved over time from Impressionism towards cubism. Works by the artists are notably in the Musée Ingres in Montauban. A retrospective of Andrieu's work was held in 2015.

Our painting presented here is an oil on panel measuring 24 x 31.5 cm and is signed at the lower right. Presented in a more recent frame, the overall framed size is 33 x 42cm.
