A wonderfully tender abstracted painting by colourist Jean Micoine (1927-2017), a Vietnam-born French artist, costume designer and theatre director. Depicting a thoughtful looking man wearing a Bicorn hat and a ruffle shirt, the painting testifies of Micoine's love for all things theatrical.

Jean Micoine studied at the Ecole supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, where he would continue to exhibit with the Group of 13. The Musée des Augustins in Toulouse owns several works by the artist, which date from the same period as the work presented here, 1948-1950.

Painted on a reused canvas - the post war years were meagre, and art supplies were scare- our oil on canvas is in good conditions, with one or two minor protuberances to the surface, due to the paint on the verso.

Measuring 61 x 50 cm, the overall framed size in a slightly more recent frame in fair condition is 74 x 62 cm.
