A joyous, life affirming still life, lightly cubist and abstracted, by Andrée Bordeaux Le Pecq (1910-1972), a woman painter with an interesting life and a fascinating background.

Originally from Brittany, she must have been a spunky girl, gaining an Oxford degree –extraordinary for a Frenchwoman in the early 1930s. During the war, he entire family were active in the resistance movement - her brother was executed, while her husband suffered Nazi experiments.

In the 1940s, Andrée studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with the great Fauve Othon Friesz.

After the war, her career took off immediately, with exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Munich, Vienna, Geneva, Florence, Rome, Ankara, Madrid, Barcelona, Dublin, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Bangkok, Tokyo and nearly a dozen US cities, including New York. Her works are in the collections of museums in Paris, Vienna, Sao Paulo, Teheran, Reykjavik, Tel Aviv, Mexico, Rio, Djakarta and Tokyo.

The oil on canvas presented here is a major work, measuring 73 x 60 cm, and dating from the 1950s/early 1960s, where her work is cubist, on the brink of being abstract. Andrée Bordeaux Le Pecq designed tapestry cartoons during that period, and the influence of this work can be felt here.

Signed at the lower left, the painting is titled on the verso. The overall framed size is 90 x 77 cm
