The drawn ogee bowl is engraved with hops and barley in saltire. This would usually be found on ale glasses and generally tells us the intended use of the glass, This unusual example may have been custom made as an ale glass in the form of a wine glass. The generous size of the bowl would allow this. This excellent two-piece glass is supported by a plain stem and a conical folded foot with a rough pontil.As can be seen, the engravings come quite close to the rim, which is unusual on a taller ale glass, however being of wine proportions, the smaller surface area has been maximised.
