Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1950s.
Almost certainly peinted en plein air, it has a great authenticity about it.
Gabriel Vié (1888-1973), a member of the Salon des Artistes Français. At the Salon, he received a special mention at the exhibition of 1935, and was awarded its silver medal in 1942. Our painting bears remains of a label on the back of the canvas, as well as an exhibition number on the stretcher. It is therefore likely that our painting here was exhibited at the Salon.
Vié also titled the painting on the verso "Gave en Hautes Pyrenees". The French word gave is a generic name referring to torrential rivers, in the west side of the Pyrenees.
The word 'gave' derives from the old Gascon gabar, based on a pre-Celtic root *gab meaning 'hollow'.
Dating from the 1940s or 50s, the oil on canvas measures 55 x 46 cm and is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size in a quality frame is 72 x 62cm.
