An attractive early 20th-century oil on canvas by award-winning Danish artist, Valdemar Kornerup (1865-1924).

Kornerup returned to paint this room on many occasions and he seems fascinated by the varying effect of light. It’s the equivalent of how Monet approached his water lilies and it hints at a degree of introversion.

Valdemar Vincent Kornerup was born in Copenhagen and studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts. In 1887, he began travelling around Europe and visited France, Italy, Spain and Greece, before heading for Norway in 1898.

He painted many of these peaceful interior scenes throughout his career and several include figures undertaking regular everyday activities. There’s a sense of calmness, which is sometimes reminiscent of his Danish contemporary, Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916).
