19th century
Description

An atmospheric portrait of a seated gentleman with a thoughtful expression and a fine beard. He appears to be deep in contemplation as he looks upwards and rest his right hand on the chair.

His ‘lost in time’ expression is amplified by the distressed nature of the canvas. Over the years, various knocks and abrasions have created a natural patina which only seems to add to the overall charm of the piece.

Signed in the lower right.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size including frame: 37” x 28” / 94cm x 72cm

Year of creation: c. 1900

Provenance: France

Condition: Tatty with several small holes, losses and abrasions. Frame a little wobbly but its fine to hang as it is.
