A fine oil on canvas by the highly regarded artist George Augustus Williams 1814-1901 titled ‘Nr Petworth’. The oil is typical of the artist’s work being at once detailed, but also free, and loose. It is a study in time and place depicting beautifully the weather on a blustery overcast day. I particularly like the sky which is wonderfully done, the sun trying to break through the clouds, also the work and detail on the sheep is superb. The painting is initialled by the artist to the lower right which is typical for him, it does not appear to be dated. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The painting retains it’s original mount and frame, the mount bears the original hand painted title.
