'Near Petworth' Oil Painting by George Augustus Williams

A fine oil on canvas by the highly regarded artist George Augustus Williams 1814-1901 titled ‘Nr Petworth’. The oil is typical of the artist’s work being at once detailed, but also free, and loose. It is a study in time and place depicting beautifully the weather on a blustery overcast day. I particularly like the sky which is wonderfully done, the sun trying to break through the clouds, also the work and detail on the sheep is superb. The painting is initialled by the artist to the lower right which is typical for him, it does not appear to be dated. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The painting retains it’s original mount and frame, the mount bears the original hand painted title. The frame is in excellent condition with one or two very minor repairs.

George Augustus Williams 1814-1901 was one of the Williams family of painters being the son of Edward who also taught him to paint. George had a long career and exhibited mainly at Sussex Street but also at the Royal Academy. He specialised in landscape painting and worked mainly around Barnes where he lived.

This painting is numbered on the reverse and indicates it may well have been one of his exhibited works.
