A fine watercolour by Belgian artist Pierre Abattucci 1871-1942. The painting is a head and shoulders portrait of a young woman in simple dress, hair festooned with garlands of flowers. The painting has very much the look of a Pre Raphaelite type work with an ethereal sitter gazing out at the viewer. The painting is in good condition with bright fresh colours. There is a slight line around the work from an old mount, this is not distracting to the eye. The watercolour is mounted in a Victorian period ebonised frame which works exceptionally well with the painting and gives the whole a dramatic decorative impact.
Pierre Abattucci was a Belgian artist associated with the Neo-Impressionism movement. He is known for his atmospheric landscapes, which captured shifts in colour, light, and shadow in both cities and the countryside, this work is therefore quite unusual and probably from his earlier career. Born in 1871 in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, Belgium, Abattucci began his art education at th...e town’s School of Decorative Arts working with François Stroobant, an institution where he later taught as well. He later moved to Brussels from 1892–1897 to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, studying under a coterie of prominent Belgian artists that included Joseph Stallaert, Jean François Portaëls, and Charles van der Stappen. Abattucci was a lithographer in addition to a painter, and his travels to Italy served as an inspiration throughout his career. The artist died in 1942 in Ixelles, Belgium.
The whole is a lovely example of the type and in very good condition, framed and ready to hang. C.1900
