Cezannian Still Life with Apples, 1918, Cubist Oil on Canvas by Swiss Woman Artist Jeanne Dreyfus

Researching this painting, I discovered a touching detail. The canvas/linen on which it is painted was originally a sheet or tablecloth - in the upper right hand corner, near the nails which stretch it, the is a carefully embroidered monogram in cross stitch! Of course: the artwork was painted, in 1918, during the war. Art supplies were scarce, and this is a poignant reminder how artists had to find alternative materials.

Our well-balanced, softly cubist Cezannian still life with apples presented here is the work of a Swiss woman artist from Morges. Jeanne Dreyfus (1882-1969), a sculptor as well as a painter, worked in Corsica and in the canton of Vaud. She exhibited notably in Lausanne, at the Galerie du Livre and the Galerie du Lion d'Or.

Measuring 46 x 61 cm, monogrammed and dated at the upper right, the painting is also signed on the verso and simply titled "Apples". There is some slight craquelure, and marks from the middle stretcher bar are visible on the recto on the canvas. A timeless work, it is hard to believe that this painting is over a hundred years old!

Presented in its original frame, the overall framed size is 54 x 70 cm.
