Description

This 19th century painting makes me think of certain works by Corot, in its modernity, and its almost dreamlike quality paired with robust realism.

It captures a fleeting moment. Like a photographic snapshot - or rather, one of those images that a camera took inadvertently, slightly off kilter – it transports us into a landscape with a magnificent tree in the foreground, with a sail boat gliding past on a lake in the background.

Measuring 25.5 x 37 cm, the canvas was slightly reduced in size at the top, then restretched, almost certainly by the artist himself. Most likely a plein air study, this mysterious oil is unsigned, and bears on the verso and old (inventory) number “11”.

In a more recent simple frame, the overall framed size is 32 x 44 cm.
