Pair of Cornish Oil Paintings by John Edmund Mace

A fine and highly decorative pair of oil paintings of Cornish landscapes by John Edmund Mace RBA (1889-1952). The pair are painted on Windsor and Newton prepared wooden panels, in oils. The two each show landscape scenes both of which are titled, one 'A Cornish farm, Gwendreath' and the other 'Helford village, Cornwall'. The paintings are signed but not dated, both are in excellent condition. The pair are mounted in a pair of vintage modern gilt frames with bespoke antiqued gilding. John Edmund Mace was a painter in oils and watercolour who exhibited widely. His works are varied in subject matter with landscapes, marines and flower paintings amongst others. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of painters in watercolours and the Royal Institute of painters in oils, as well as provincially. He was also an official war artist during the great war in France between 1818-19. He was London born but later settled in Torquay which is the likely reason for these Cornish scenes. The pair are great examples of English Impressionism and have a wonderful gentle colour palette. C.1940.
