State of Undress: French Expressionist Nude on a Sofa, 1949 Modernist Oil on Canvas

Discussing cultural differences, a French art dealer said to me once, almost accusingly:

"The English do not like to buy the naked ladies!"

While I think he may have had a point, I sometimes cannot resist showing one I find particularly appealing, to prove him wrong.

The young lady presented here in a state of undress in the middle of the last century was most likely the wife of the artist who painted her, Maurice Paulve (1916-1994). She is presented with panache and brio, and a good sense of fun.

Paulve was a painter from Burgundy who taught at the Fine Arts Academy in Beaune. He would late turn to abstraction, but our oil on canvas - interestingly signed and dated twice, once 1949, once 1950 - is Expressionist in style.

Measuring 33 x 41 cm, the overall framed size in a simple frame in painted wood is 37 x 45 cm.
