Grape Vine Roots, Turenne by Tate Gallery Master Fougeron: France Abstracted Modernist Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

I am delighted to present a work by an artist to who I was first introduced in 1997, by his brother-in-arms Boris Taslitzky.

André Fougeron (1913-1998) , along with Taslitzky, was the foremost socialist realist painter in France.

At one point near forgotten in France, where his communist allegiance was considered uncomfortable, the rehabilitation of the artist started in the UK.

Transatlantic Civilisation, one of Fougeron's Masterpieces, is now in the Tate Gallery, along with 7 other works by him.

In 1982, his work "The Judges" figured in "Aftermath: new images of man, France 1944-1954", which inaugurated the Barbican Art Gallery.

Surrounded by colourful paintings by Matisse, Bonnard and Picasso, Fougeron's 1950 painting none the less dominated coverage of the exhibition.

A new generation of Anglo-American scholarship on the artist is emerging, and even in France, things are changing: Fougeron had a one-man show in the Museum of Roubaix in 2014.

Fougeron's painting are rarely on the market, as many have been lost or destroyed.

Here is a rare chance to own a painting by the Tate Gallery master.

Dating from the 1960s, it is a forceful, pure, stylised and elegant work that is almost abstract. It depicts grape vine roots. I gather Fougeron had a studio in the Turenne, which inspired a series on grape vine, rootstock, red earth and vineyards - a subject close to his heart. Works from the series were exhibited at the exhibition "The Loire and its Harvest" at the Centre d'Art International (Paris) in 1970

An oil in canvas bearing the stamp of the legendary artists' suppliers Lucien Lefebrve-Foinet, Paris, the artwork measures 50 x 61 cm and is in excellent condition.

The overall framed size in its vintage frame is 63 x 74 cm.
