Description

A thought-provoking portrait of a seated older lady dressed in mid-19th-century mourning wear. She’s holding a teacup in her right hand as she looks into the distance, perhaps reminiscing about a lost companion.

Mourning wear was a common sight during the Victorian era, particularly following the death of Prince Albert in 1861. By dressing in ‘widow’s weeds’, it encouraged those around you to act with kindness and consideration.

The portrait is housed within a beautiful scroll and foliate frame and bears an exhibition label on the reverse.

Size including frame: 24?” x 21” / 62cm x 53cm

Year of creation: c. 1865

Provenance: Germany

Condition: A few scratches but otherwise fine. Frame with light age-related wear.
