French 19th Century Royal Portraitist: Little Girl with Flower Basket, Romantic Period, Circa 1840

Description

A charming and very tender representation of a young girl with braids by Laure Houssaye de Léomenil (1806-1866) , one of the rare woman artists of the 19th Century who found international acclaim in her own time. A pastellist, her work focussued on orientalist subjects and on portraits.

Her portrait of the Princess Hosni Shah was exhibited in New York in 1853. She was also commissioned by King Louis Philippe of France, and from 1837 produced 11 portraits of the French Royal family.

Her work remains highly acclaimed. Her pastel portrait of Aurore Demidoff and her son sold at Christie's for $10.000, and her portraits of the Saint Croix children fetched a similar amount at the same auction house.

The pastel presented here is drawn on size of the sheet of paper measuring 46 x 38 cm. Signed by the artist at the lower left, it is still sealed under its original glass with its original backing board. The framed size is just over 49 x 41 cm.
