Italian Classical Oil Painting of a Goddess

A fine quality oil on card of the Roman Goddess Ceres. This type of painting was often made in replica of the famous frescoes discovered at Pompeii and it is probably the case here. These works made in Naples were produced for those on a tour of Italy. This example is an unusual subject and has been mounted in an ebonised frame with gilt slip which it has been in for some time though unlikely to be the original. The whole has a great Neoclassical feel to it and would work well in a Georgian interior. The painting is in good condition though there are some marks on the outer grey edge of the work. I have not taken the painting out of the frame preferring to leave it as it is and it is ready to hang. C.1900.
