Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1930s.
He arrived in Paris aged 20, to study with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian. At art school, he met Dunoyer de Segonzac, a contemporary, who became a close friend. He also became close to Max Weber, who introduced him to Picasso. With Matisse, Marquet, Jacqueline Marval and Rouault as companions, Maissieux was part of the circle of the masters of French modernism, and considered their equal.
Possibly due to his bedridden childhood, Maissieux became a great traveller, with frequent visits to Rome and North Africa. The painting presented here was painting in 1932 during a stay in Morocco. It is a decetively simple work, with flat shapes and finely nuanced jewel colours, that might have been painted by Matisse. A thoughtful, sensitive depiction of a young girl in traditional dress, it is the very antithesis of colonialist art.
An oil on panel measuring 35 x 27 cm, the painting is signed and dated at the lower right. In original condition and in its original frame, the overall dimensions are 47 x 39.
