Description

This oil paining is double sided: painted circa 1940, when artists' materials were scarce, the painter Suzanne Roché made the most of the little she had available.

A newspaper article from the 1930s calls Suzanne Roche her “one of Montparnasse’s most important woman artists”, along with Natalia Goncharova and Suzanne Valadon.

Roche exhibited at the major French Salons, and was a Member of the Sociéte des Artistes Français. the French state commissioned works from her.

I found it hard to decide which side to present! Roché herself seems to have had a preference for the Paris view, as this is the side she signed and dated. It depicts the Pont des Arts and the St Jacques tower from the left bank. The date, May 1940, of course is poignant: it was the month the Germans invaded France.

There is no sign of it in this bustling city scene - unless you think that its spring colours are tempered with grey for a reason. But it may simply be a depiction of one of the last - cloudy - days of peace.

I personally have a penchant for the other side of the panel, which may have been painted a little earlier, even though there are minor touch ups to the sky.

Depicting a farm and grazing cattle in the green rolling hills of Normandy under a cloudy sky, it is a landscape that is lovely yet unsentimental, strong, fresh, distinctive and a littel fauve.

Presented in a very simple frame, recto and verso can easily be reversed according to your preference and mood - you are getting two paintings for the price of one! Size panel alone: 23.5 x 35 cm, overall framed: 28 x 43 cm
