Coastal Scene Oil Painting by Adam Knight

A fine and dramatic oil on canvas coastal scene by Adam Knight. The painting shows a scene by the beach looking out towards coastal defences, it is a simple but atmospheric scene. The painting has obviously be worked quickly 'plein air' to capture the scene at one particular time of day. I like very much the foreground with the half buried anchor. The painting is not titled but it is likely to be the east coast. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in very good condition, there is some craquelure and this is often the case with paintings done outside where the paint dried quickly. The painting also retains the original and fine quality gilt frame which is in great untouched condition.

Adam Knight was a Nottingham artist and a highly regarded watercolourist, this as an oil painting is very unusual for him. He was an extremely active member of the Nottingham School of Art and was at one time it's president. He exhibited very widely and extensively including 272 times at Nottingham and 244 at the Walker Gallery London. He exhibited at every major gallery and also at the Royal Academy, he died in 1930.

This is an unusual work by a highly regarded artist, which has a great atmosphere and dramatic decorative appeal. C.1900.
