Description

A luminous and fresh river landscape by Edward B Fulde (1853-1918) an American expatriate artist active in France.

Relatively little biographical information is available on the American, Missouri born artist Edward Bernard Fulde, even though I have found reviews of his paintings in newspapers such as the New York Times.

Fulde exhibited with the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, in Japan and in Paris, where he had a studio. An artist and connoisseur who was in close contact with many of the most important painters and sculptors of his day.

It is therefore likely that Fulde associated with the American artist colony round Monet in Giverny, and that the landscape depicted is in Normandy, near Vernon or Giverny.

Fulde's bronze portrait by Victor David Brenner is in the Musée d'Orsay.

The oil on canvas presented here is an oil on canvas on its original stretcher, measuring 32 x 46 cm. Paint losses to the lower edge of the canvas, invisible under the frame, have been restored. The overall framed size in a modest more recent frame are 38 x 53 cm.
