‘A Fairy City’ Oil Painting by Reginald St. Clair Marston

A stunning oil on panel by Reginald St. Clair Marston 1886-1943. The painting shows an Italian city in the morning light, which gives it an ethereal glow hence the title of ‘The Fairy City’. The technique is very interesting as it is painted in thick impasto oils which all have a vertical stroke and gives an effect almost like pointillism. The painting has a label on the back which gives the information of the artist and the title. It reads F.Marston which could be the wife of Reginald who was called Freda, however the work is much closer to that of Reginald and therefore I believe this to be an error. The painting is in excellent condition and has been professionally cleaned, it is also mounted in a period gilt frame with textured surface which mirrors the effect of the painting beautifully.

Reginald St.Clair Marston 1886-1943 was a highly accomplished artist, made a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1924 and the Society of Painters in Oils the same year. He exhibited widely including 20 times at the Royal Academy and 90 times at the Society of British Artists among many others.

This is a wonderful example of post impressionist art and highly decorative. C.1920.
