Description

A Regency portrait miniature of a lady wearing a pale blue-grey dress with a frilled collar, a string of pearls and in her curly hair a scarf. Probably painted on ivory, in a copper gilt frame with a suspension look and ring and under a lightly convex glass, engraved on the back with the sitters identity. Painted by an unknown hand, English circa 1805.

The sitter is Elizabeth, Lady Collier (née Fryer) who was the second wife of Admiral Sir George Collier, (1738-1795), who served in the Seven Years War, the War of American Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars. He was knighted in 1775 and married Elizabeth Fryer in 1781 and was elected Member of Parliament for Honiton in 1784. He returned to sea in 1790, was promoted to Vice-Admiral in 1794 and died in April 1795. Elizabeth bore him six children, and died in Paris in 1830.

Condition: Good, with some wear to the back of the frame.
