An extensive 18th-century classical landscape depicting a peasant family, surrounded by their cattle, resting on a river bank outside the City gates.

This style of landscape painting was made popular by the Dutch in the 17th-century. In contrast to their Italian counterparts, the Dutch were less interested in classically-influenced historical scenes, in favour of depicting popular subjects involving everyday people.

By the 18th-century, this approach had influenced artists (and buyers) throughout Europe and this particular painting certainly bears the hallmarks of the Dutch tradition. We acquired the painting in Germany and it’s plausible that it could possibly be of Dutch origin.

It’s a nice size and would easily become a decorative focal point in a large sitting room or dining room.

The painting is housed within a beautiful 20th-century scroll and foliate swept frame.

Year of creation: c. 1750

Condition: Very good overall following its professional restoration at some point within the last 50 years. The canvas has been revarnished and relined. Frame in excellent condition.
