An utterly charming depiction of a young cook, carrying a copper pot as well as a brioche in a basket along a quiet street. Wearing traditional chef's whites including a toque, the boy has a gentle, somewhat timid young face. It is very moving and sensitive naturalist painting, it portraying life at the turn of the century.

I have not been able to identify the artist, Magdeleine, who perhaps simply signed with her first name. French in origin -like almost all our pictures - it was acquired in Rouen in Normandy. The painting is precisely dated 5.X. 1900.

An oil on canvas, the artwork measures 61 x 46 cm. The original canvas has been patched in two areas, faintly visible in the background. In a simple, more recent frame, the overall size is 66 x 51 cm.

This would be a lovely painting for anyone with an interest in food or cooking, and would make a lovely kitchen or dining room painting!
