Description

A wonderful, elegant floral still life depicting roses in a vase by Marthe Barbaud-Koch (1863-c1928), a renowned painter from Lyons who specialised exclusively in flower painting.

Having studied with Sophie Olivier, Loubet, Elie Laurent, Jules Ferdinand Médard and William Bouguereau, Marthe Barbaud Koch started her career Paris, before returning to her native Lyons, where she exhibited from 1887. She also showed he work at the Salons in Dijon and Montpellier.

The oil on canvas presented here dates from circa 1900 and measures 46 x 61 cm. It is signed at the lower right and in excellent overall condition, with pinprick holes around the very edges of the canvas, possibly from the artist's stretching the canvas before mounting it on to its stretcher bars. In a more recent frame, the overall framed size is 79 x 63 cm.

Researching the artist, I came across an auction result for a very similar- if somewhat larger -, painting, in which Barbaud-Koch may even have used the same vase! This other composition sold for the Euro equivalent of £5200. Details are attached for reference.
