William John Lawrence writing in the ‘National Dictionary of Biography,considered him second only to Clarkson Stanfield among British scene painters of the 19 th century.Beverly also painted to exhibit,with watercolour being his preferred medium.He showed at the Royal Manchester Institution, in the 1820s and 1830s,and again later in his life.Between 1865 and 1880 he exhibited 29 pictures at the R.A., most of them seascapes.His last picture shown there in 1880 was this watercolour;’Fishing Boats going before the Wind; Early Morning’ monogrammed watercolour,image size 59 x100 cms,framed size 78x119 cms.This work was praised in The Times June 28th 1880’Fishing Boats going before the Wind’(792) ,a beautiful drawing of the gray effect of misty morning on a popping sea,with boats in motion,represented as this great scenic artist knows how to represent them greater than most living painters.See correspondence and newspaper cutting attached to back of the picture.His work has been compared to that of Richard Parkes Bonnington.
This is an important example of his work.
