This is another one of those scenarios whereby you know that a portrait has a rich story to tell but it’s sadly been lost over time.

It’s clear that this mysterious gentleman was once part of a larger work as the composition is unusual for a portrait. Perhaps he was originally stood alongside several others in a Flemish interior scene?

The portrait certainly carries a great deal of atmosphere and would make an interesting decorative addition to the right environment.

Year of creation: c. 1650

Condition: Craquelure in areas and the canvas has been relined. Scattered paint losses around the periphery, including a section in the upper left, and various abrasions.
